Meidan Emam, Esfahan (#115)
The 17th century marked a period of prosperity for the city of Isfahan as Shah Abbas I established his capital there and built one of the biggest squares of all times in the city. Occupying a space of 560 meters length and 160 meters width, Meidan Emam or Naghshe Jahan Square is enclosed by two-storey covered passageways. The Sheikh Lotfollah mosque, the Ali Qapu Palace, the portico of the Qeysarieh bazaar and the Royal mosque claim a portion of the square on each of the square’s four sides. In 1979, the Square was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
