Every step in Sheikh Safi-al din Khanegah and Shrine Ensemble, in Ardabil Province of Iran, is a step in the world of Sufi Mysticism. The 16th century tomb mosque has been erected to honor the founder of Safavid dynasty, the spiritual heir of the Sufi Order. It imitates the seven stages of Sufi mysticism through seven sections, separated from one another through eight gates, representing the eight attitudes of Sufism. The exquisitely ornamented ensemble is a microcosmic city incorporating bazaars, libraries, hamams, etc. and serves cultural, communal and educational purposes. The ensemble was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010.
